Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) (Taipei, Taiwan) has awarded a full turnkey contract to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (TYO:7011) (MHI) (Tokyo, Japan) and CTCI Corporation (TPE:9933) (Taipei), for the construction of three 800-megawatt (MW) coal-fired, supercritical power generation units. The estimated, but unconfirmed, project investment in the three units will be approximately $2.6 billion.
CTCI is the largest engineering and construction company in Taiwan and offers construction services over a wide range of industrial sectors and processes, both in the domestic market and internationally.
The new units will replace the existing plant and complete units 1, 2 and 3 at Taipower's Linkou Thermal Power Plant in northern Taiwan, 20 kilometers west of Taipei, and will help to meet the high rate of growth in power demand in the Taipei area.
The three units will begin commercial operations sequentially in November 2015, November 2016 and November 2020. MHI will manufacture and supply the three boilers and three steam turbines, and the three generators will be manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.
Taiwan has a total installed power generation capacity of more than 40,000 MW. Taipower is a state owned utility and the sole integrated transmission and distribution company in Taiwan. The power sector has been liberalized since 1994 but Taipower continues to generate nearly 75 % of all electrical power. The company transmits and distributes power through purchases from independent power producers.
