Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Of the $14 billion in industrial projects under development in Alabama, Mobile County is one of the leading counties attracting industrial project development. In recent years, Alabama has been a hotbed of economic development activity, scoring several large-scale grassroot projects such as ThyssenKrupp's $4 billion steel mill in Washington County. Access to port facilities so the company could import raw materials played a major role in securing the big project.

But Mobile County, which is home to more than 90 major industrial plants, has a long history of industrial development. With access to U.S. Gulf Coast shipping lanes and close proximity to regional oil and gas reserves, Mobile County has a number of oil & gas production, terminal and transmission industry, chemical processing, and metals & minerals facilities. These plants spend millions of dollars every year on capital and maintenance projects.

According to Industrial Info's North America Industrial Project Database, there are 45 industrial projects totaling more than $1 billion in Mobile County.

One of the larger planned projects is being developed by Denbury Resources Incorporated (NYSE:DNR) (Plano, Texas) at the company's enhanced oil recovery operations in Citronelle, Mobile County, Alabama. The company is planning a Phase VI expansion of the CO2 flood operations at a cost of near $600 million.
