Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As wildfires tear through Alberta and devastate Canada's Oil & Gas Industry, the country remains a bright spot in one key area: It has become a global leader in the construction of renewable energy. Industrial Info is tracking $2.08 billion in wind-energy projects that currently are set to begin construction in Canada before the end of the year.

Canada is the eighth-ranked country globally for renewables investments, spurred by a wide variety of government incentives and agreements with private companies. Examples include Samsung Renewable Energy Incorporated's (Mississauga, Ontario) Green Energy Investment Agreement with the Ontario government, which has produced four wind projects to date, including the Armow Windfarm (Kincardine, Ontario), which began commercial operations in February. For more information, see February 8, 2016, article - Samsung Completes Fourth Wind Energy Project under Ontario Green Energy Agreement.

The largest wind-energy project set to begin construction before the end of the year is EDF EN Canada Incorporated's (Toronto, Ontario) $500 million Nicolas-Riou Windfarm near Rimouski, Quebec. The project, which was slated to begin construction this spring, will comprise 68 Vestas wind turbine generator sets, each with a 3.3-megawatt (MW) capacity, for a total of 224.4 MW. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Ontario is host to the biggest share of this year's planned windfarm construction kickoffs, in both project number (nine) and total investment value ($832 million). The largest of these is Pattern Energy Group's (Toronto) $300 million Belle River Windfarm in Lakeshore. Still in the permitting phase, but currently scheduled kick off in the fourth quarter, the facility will comprise 44 Siemens wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of 3.2 MW, for a total capacity of 150 MW. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Earlier this year, Ontario became the first province to surpass 4,000 MW of wind energy. For more information, see May 10, 2016, article - Canada Ranks High in Renewables Investment, Ontario Leads Country in Projects.

While Ontario and Quebec account for almost 80% of the investment value for wind projects set to begin construction through December, British Columbia nominally is host to one of Canada's largest: Aeolis Wind Power Corporation's (Sidney, British Columbia) $300 million Elephant Ridge Windfarm in Chetwynd. However, the project has faced numerous delays over the years--the original kickoff date was in 2011--and still is in its planning phase. And it is facing major funding problems, with British Columbia's utility BC Hydro and Power Authority (BC Hydro) recently abandoning support for most wind projects on the drawing board. Nonetheless, Aeolis hopes to build 75 to 100 wind turbine generator sets, each with a capacity of between 1.5 and 2 MW, for a total capacity of roughly 150 MW. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Earlier this year, the Canadian Wind Energy Association effectively pulled out of British Columbia, citing a lack of opportunity for projects, and turned its attention to Alberta and Saskatchewan, according to Business Vancouver. While that's bad news for Aeolis, its good news for many companies in the two central provinces, which have set ambitious goals for renewable energy: Alberta is seeking to replace the capacity to be lost from pending coal-fired plant closures, and Saskatchewan wants to double its renewable capacity by 2030.

Saskatchewan does not have any wind-energy projects set to begin construction before the end of the year, but Alberta is at work on Enercon Canada Incorporated's (Toronto) $138 million Welsch Windfarm in Pincher Creek. The 69-MW facility will comprise 26 wind turbine generator sets and is slated to begin construction in the fourth quarter. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
