Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The recently completed Armow Windfarm, which is located in Kincardine, Ontario, has begun commercial operations. The windfarm is the product of a joint venture between Samsung Renewable Energy Incorporated (Mississauga, Ontario) and Pattern Energy Group LP (Pattern Development) (San Francisco, California).
Armow Windfarm is the fourth wind project completed under Samsung's Green Energy Investment Agreement with the Ontario Government.
The agreement includes a C$5 billion ($3.6 billion) dollar private--sector investment in Ontario, all with the goal of creating the largest cluster of wind and solar power in the world. It has proposed to create 9,000 jobs and help kick-start a new industry in the region while generating 1,369 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy.
Industrial Info is tracking projects for the 150-MW Belle River Windfarm, the 50-MW Windsor Solar Project and the 100-MW Sol-Luce Kingston Solar Power Project. These are all part of Samsung's Green Energy Investment Agreement.
Industrial Info is also tracking the operational facilities that are part of the agreement. These include: the 270-MW South Kent Windfarm, the 270-MW K2 Wind Ontario Windfarm and the 253MW Grand River Renewable Energy Park.
Armow generates 180 MW of wind-derived power, and it is anticipated to generate enough power for approximately 70,000 Ontario homes each year. The facility includes 91 Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) 2.3-MW wind turbines, which were made in Windsor. All 273 blades were manufactured in Tillonsburg. More than 750 workers in Ontario manufactured the turbines and blades. During its peak construction phases, the Armow project provided more than 350 Ontario jobs. The average number of workers on site was about 200.
Armow is anticipated to produce more than C$75 million ($54 million) in property taxes, community benefits and landowner leasing royalties.
In addition, Armow committed C$13.6 million ($9.8 million) to the Municipality of Kincardine to support education and initiatives through a long-term community benefit program. It also contributed C$1 million ($719,000) to the Kincardine Airport to improve operations.
Power generated by the windfarm will be purchased under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
