Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--M.A. Mortenson Construction (Minneapolis, Minnesota), which provides engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services to energy and infrastructure projects across North America, has cautiously improved its outlook for 2019. The company believes many of the economic and political factors driving up costs for construction projects could be slowing. Industrial Info is tracking more than $12 billion in active projects involving Mortenson.

Mortenson joined other EPC companies last year in sounding the alarm on numerous factors that threaten to increase construction costs, notably ongoing labor shortages and tariffs. Although the latter still could increase materials costs, Mortenson now says it expects such increases to level off in 2019, since most of the observed impacts from tariffs have occurred, according to Milwaukee's BizTimes.

Renewables, such as solar and wind, are expected to be the fastest-growing source of U.S. electricity generation for at least the next two years, and likely will account for a larger share of U.S. power generation than nuclear and coal in less than a decade, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) Annual Energy Outlook. Mortenson is among the EPC companies developing such projects in their most viable geographies--notably wind-powered generation, in which Mortenson is at work across the Great Plains and Midwest.

Iowa calls itself the "breadbasket of the world" when it comes to agriculture, but it is assuming an equally important role in wind-powered energy. Mortenson is at work on a pair of windfarms in the Hawkeye State: MidAmerican's $500 million Arbor Hill Windfarm near Stuart, which will generate 250 megawatts (MW) from 125 turbines, and EDF Renewable Energy's $170 million Ivester Windfarm in Conrad, which will generate 91 MW from 35 turbines. The turbines will be supplied by Vestas and Siemens AG (Munich, Germany), respectively. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Arbor Hill and Ivester projects.

Mortenson has numerous windfarm projects under construction across the country, including three in other wind-rich areas:
  • ENGIE SA's (Paris, France) $200 million first phase of the Solomon Forks Windfarm near Colby, Kansas, which will generate 276 MW from 175 Siemens turbines; see project report
  • Geronimo Energy LLC's (Edina, Minnesota) $300 million Green River Windfarm in Dixon, Illinois, which will generate 212 MW from 64 Gamesa turbines; see project report
  • Sammons Renewable Energy's (Boston, Massachusetts) $410 million Rio Bravo I Windfarm in Rio Grande City, Texas, which will generate 237.6 MW from 66 Vestas turbines; see project report
Sammons Renewable Energy acquired the Rio Bravo windfarm from Longroad Energy Holdings in December. It is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2019, and to be operational by June 2019.

Mortenson's solar work includes Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners' (Copenhagen, Denmark) $420 million Missae Solar Park in Childress, Texas, which will generate 288 MW from more than 654,500 polycrystalline photovoltaic (PV) panels. Later this spring, Mortenson and Copenhagen are set to begin work on a $5 million substation to service the solar farm. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the solar park and substation.
