Mountainview Power Halts Power Generation in California

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Mountainview Power Company LLC (San Bernardino, California), a totally owned subsidiary of AES Pacific (San Francisco, California), a division of AES Corporation (NYSE: AES) (Arlington, Virginia), has mothballed power plant operations at its San Bernardino, California power plant. The company suspended construction of a $400 million 1,034-megawatt (MW) expansion in March 2002 and due to soft market conditions is also mothballing existing units at the plant.

Mountainview Power had selected Bechtel as their design-build contractor and started construction in fall of 2001. The 1,034MW expansion was to install two natural gas-fired combined-cycle trains. Each train was to consist of two General Electric (GE) combustion turbine/generator sets each with a Foster Wheeler heat recovery generator (HRSG) and a GE steam turbine/generator set.

The two units scheduled to be mothballed, which were installed in 1957 and 1958, are both gas/oil tangential-fired Asea Brown Bavari/Combustion Engineering (ABB/CE) boilers 475,000 lb/hr, 1,000psig @ 1,000F with 65MW GE steam turbine/generator sets.

AES is a leading global power company that provides competitive generation, distribution, and retail energy supply services. The company's generating assets include interests in 177 facilities totaling over 59 giga-watts of capacity. AES's electricity distribution network has over 727,000 km of conductor and associated rights of way and sells over 108,000 giga-watt hours per year to over 16 million end-use customers. AES is dedicated to providing electricity worldwide in a socially responsible way.
