MPX's Parnaiba Thermo Power Plant Obtains Installation License in Brazil

Researched by Industrial Info Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--MPX Energia (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) (SAO:MPXE3), the power generation branch of multi-industry group EBX (Rio de Janeiro), has obtained an installation license for the construction of the 1,863-megawatt (MW) Parnaiba Thermo Power Plant ("MPX Parnaíba"), granted by the Environmental Secretary of the State of Maranhao (SEMA).

The MPX Parnaiba facility will be in the municipality of Santo Antonio dos Lopes in the state of Maranhao, near the Presidente Dutra transmission substation. This generating plant will use natural gas produced in the exploration blocks of OGX Maranhao (Rio de Janeiro), in the basin of Parnaiba.

The plant is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2014 and will consist of a simple-cycle and a combined-cycle module, allowing for greater flexibility in the use of natural gas and energy trading. MPX is currently selecting the construction contractor and the equipment supplier.

MPX Energia has more than 9,000 MW in planning, engineering or construction phases in Brazil. Some of the projects under development are the 2,100-MW Phase I of the MPX Acu coal project and the 3,300-MW Phase II of the natural gas MPX Acu project, both of which are in the municipality of Sao Joao da Barra, Rio de Janeiro; and the 727-MW MPX Sul coal project in the municipality of Candiota, Rio Grande do Sul, which is expected to begin construction this year.
