Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Perth, Australia)--Cleveland Power Limited (Queensland, Australia) has cleared all hurdles for the development of the Mt. Cotton biomass cogeneration project in Mt. Cotton, Queensland. The 7.6-megawatt (MW) project recently received all approvals, including the permits from local council, on which the company had been working since early this year.
David Bray, the development manager for Cleveland Power, said that the project has reached an "exciting" stage, with final designs for the specialist kiln now complete. The manufacturing of the boiler is due to begin in the next month.
The project is in a detailed engineering phase, and construction is expected to commence by end of September or early October 2013. Power plant construction will take more than 14 months to complete, and the plant is expected to be generating power by the end of 2014.
Cleveland Power is a special purpose business entity formed by Darwalla Milling Company (Cleveland, Australia) to develop this biomass project. The cogeneration project will be located on freehold land at Hill View Road in Mt. Cotton in the Redlands Shire, which is 40 kilometres south of Brisbane. The project site is adjacent to the golden cockerel processing plant, which is jointly owned by Darawalla Milling Group (Mount Cotton, Australia) and Woodlands (Brisbane, Australia).
The power plant will be built with one 7.6-MW Siemens steam turbine and a rotary kiln boiler, which will burn approximately 60,000 tonnes of chicken litter a year, as per the limit approved by the state government.
In addition to electricity, the biomass plant will supply approximately 20,000 gigajoules per annum of processed steam to the golden cockerel chicken processing plant and will reduce greenhouse gases by up to 120,000 tonnes per year.
Cleveland Power recently met with the independent Community Consultative Committee, a local community that was established to work with the company on the construction of the project. Bray says Cleveland Power will keep the community updated on construction plans.
