Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A rush of bidders sought prequalification to tender the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the 800-megawatt (MW) Kudu power plant project, which is to be built near Oranjemund on Namibia's South Atlantic coast.
Out of the 45 prequalification tender bids received, well before the August deadline, 15 companies and consortiums have been shortlisted for the CCGT project contract.

South African companies were part of the two consortiums selected in the list of 15. Iberdrola Engineering and Construction (Bilbao, Spain) consists of partners from Spain and South Africa, and the SNC-Lavalin (TO:SNC) (Montreal, Quebec) and General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) consortium has Canadian and South African partners.
The other shortlisted, prequalified companies that will partake in the full EPC tendering process are GS Engineering and Construction (South Korea); Posco Engineering and Construction (NYSE:PKX) (Seoul, South Korea), Hyundai Engineering and Construction (KSX:000720) (Seoul), Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios International (Madrid, Spain), Sumitomo Corporation (NYSE:SMFG) (Tokyo) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (OTC:MHVYF) (Tokyo, Japan), Technicas Reunidas (Madrid, Spain), Ansaldo Energia (Genoa, Italy), Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany), General Electric, Alstom (Paris, France), Shanghai Electric Group (HKX:2727) (Shanghai, China), Daewoo Engineering and Construction (KSX:047040) (Seoul, South Korea) and Shaw Power International (UAE).
