Nanaimo Forest Products On Schedule to Begin Major Maintenance Shutdown at Mill

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Nanaimo Forest Products Limited (Nanaimo, British Columbia) will commence a two-week scheduled maintenance shutdown at its Harmac Pacific Pulp operations in Nanaimo on October 18, 2010.

Along with routine inspection and repairs, the company has several projects that will be started and completed during the downtime. Pre-shutdown activities will begin this weekend, and the mill's maintenance team and outside contractors will be working around the clock to ensure the mill restarts November 1.

Major components of the mill that will see repairs and replacements include continuous and batch digesters, bleach plants, pulp dryers, power and recovery boilers, and a 30-megawatt steam turbine/generator.

The Harmac mill was built as three separate production lines between 1950 and 1963. The plant produces Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) pulp.
