New 800-MW Green Hydrogen Plant Confirmed for Germany

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Denmark's Copenhagen Energy Partners (CIP) (Copenhagen) has kicked off Project Anker, a green hydrogen production facility in Sande, Germany.

Funded through its Energy Transition Fund and in partnership with Friesen Elektra Green Energy AG (Friesen Elektra), CIP said that the site near the energy and industrial hub of Wilhelmshaven will have an electrolysis capacity of 400 megawatts (MW) to start, with plans to expand capacity to 800 MW at a later stage. The location is also near Germany's planned national hydrogen network. The facility is projected to produce 80,000 tons of green hydrogen annually that will be used by a number of German industries, including steel and chemicals, as well as the transport sector. Hydrogen production will be fully powered by grid-connected renewable energy from windfarms and solar sources. "Project Anker has the potential to make an important contribution to Germany's journey towards a carbon-neutral future," said said Felix Pahl, partner at CIP, which is the world's largest dedicated fund manager for greenfield renewable energy investments with a budget of 31 billion euro (US$32.6 billion). "We continue to see a large potential in green hydrogen despite slower-than-expected market development, and we remain committed to investments in large-scale renewable infrastructure solutions to decarbonize energy-intensive industries," said Pahl. In November, Industrial reported on Germany's plan for Europe's largest hydrogen network, which will span slightly more than 9,000 kilometers (km), which has been granted permission by Germany's Federal Network Agency (BNetzA). The hydrogen core network (HCN) was proposed by Germany's gas transmission system operators (TSOs) last summer and will cost 19.7 billion euro (US$20.5 billion) to build. It will be rolled out in stages between 2025 and 2032 in preparation for the country's large-scale increase in hydrogen production. By 2032, the network's feed-in capacity will be 101 gigawatts (GW) and the feed-out capacity 87 GW.
