Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Zachry Engineering Corporation (Amarillo, Texas), a subsidiary of Zachry Holdings Incorporated (San Antonio, Texas), was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center, which is located in Broward County, Florida, and owned by Florida Power and Light Company (Juno Beach, Florida), a subsidiary of Nextera Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (North Palm Beach, Florida).
The 1,250-megawatt, natural gas-fired, combined-cycle generation project will consist of three Siemens SGT6-8000H natural gas-fired combustion turbine generators, with Nooter/Eriksen heat recovery steam generators and a Siemens steam turbine generator. After the demolition of the existing Port Everglades power plant, built in 1960 and closed in 2011, the new and more efficient combined-cycle technology will finish construction in 2016 and provide enough electrical generation to power 260,000 average-sized homes. The new power plant is scheduled to begin construction in early 2014 and will cost $1.1 billion to complete.
Zachry is currently completing construction on the Cape Canaveral and Riviera Beach combined-cycle projects for Florida Power and Light. These generation projects, which feature the same efficient, combined-cycle technology, began construction in 2011.
When completed, the power plants will run on natural gas, produce more power, use 35% less fuel per megawatt-hour, and reduce air emissions by more than 90%.
