Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On October 15, Unit 1 at the Salem Nuclear Station in Lower Alloways Creek, New Jersey, was taken offline for refueling and turbine inspections. The outage was originally scheduled to last approximately 25 days. Plant personnel began heating the unit up on November 8, which was the original return date. However, on Monday, November 10, the restart was delayed because of additional turbine and valve problems. Plant personnel now hope to restart the unit on Friday, November 14.
Salem Unit 1 began producing electricity in December 1976, and Unit 2 began producing electricity in May 1981. Both steam turbines are pressurized water reactors (PWR) manufactured by Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) Westinghouse.
