New Jersey Nuclear Unit Experiences Delays During Restart

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On October 15, Unit 1 at the Salem Nuclear Station in Lower Alloways Creek, New Jersey, was taken offline for refueling and turbine inspections. The outage was originally scheduled to last approximately 25 days. Plant personnel began heating the unit up on November 8, which was the original return date. However, on Monday, November 10, the restart was delayed because of additional turbine and valve problems. Plant personnel now hope to restart the unit on Friday, November 14.

The Salem Nuclear Power Station is located next to the Hope Creek Generating Station. Both are owned and operated by Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated (NYSE:PEG) (Newark, New Jersey). Public Service Enterprise Group Nuclear operates both Salem units and owns 57.41% of the plant and its output. The remaining 42.59% percent is owned by Exelon Nuclear (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois).

Salem Unit 1 began producing electricity in December 1976, and Unit 2 began producing electricity in May 1981. Both steam turbines are pressurized water reactors (PWR) manufactured by Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) Westinghouse.

Public Service Enterprise is one of the nation's largest independent power producers with more than 14,000 megawatts (MW) of electric generating capacity in operation, and 1,200 (MW) under construction. The company's other primary subsidiaries are Public Service Electric and Gas Company, New Jersey's oldest and largest energy distribution utility company, and PSEG Energy Holdings, a holding company for other nonregulated businesses.
