Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Power generation developers in New Jersey have plans to install 31 natural gas-fired generating units, adding 3,158 megawatts (MW) of capacity in the state. The addition would raise New Jersey's natural gas-fired power generation capacity from 10,605 MW utilizing 158 units to 13,763-MW through 189 units.
The majority of the new generation will be from the addition of combined-cycle units at four sites. The balance will be cogeneration facilities, plus the addition of peaking units.
The reason for utilizing natural gas is that it is fairly economical, and the units can be brought online fairly quickly. Natural gas is also a cleaner burning fuel than biomass, coal, petroleum coke, municipal solid waste and oil.
The four major projects are:
Hess Corporation's (NYSE:HES) (New York, New York) projects at Bayonne Energy Center
Hess' Newark Energy Center
Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated's (Silver Spring, Maryland) Woodbridge Energy Center
NRG Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey) Old Bridge Clean Energy Center
