New York Container Terminal Plans $350 Million Expansion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New York Container Terminal (NYCT) (New York, New York) is currently planning a $350 million expansion of the Howland Hook Marine Container Terminal in Staten Island, New York.

Plans are to nearly double the capacity of the existing container terminal, which currently consists of three berths with a combined capacity of 450,000 lifts per year, by adding a fourth berth that would increase the capacity to 800,000 lifts per year. The project will be constructed on 16 acres of wetlands with only 12 acres being filled in and the other four being dredged to deepen the new berth's channel to 50 feet. Included with the new berth a quarter-mile wharf and the addition of four new post-Panamax cranes, a container-handling and storage area, a three-story marine operations building, a single-story crane operations building and five security booths.

An engineering firm is anticipated to be selected in the late spring of 2011. A general contractor is scheduled to be selected in September 2011. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2012, with completion slated for the fall of 2014.

Philip Habib & Associates (New York, New York) will provide consulting services for the expansion.

The Howland Hook Marine Terminal is a full-service container and general cargo-handling facility located on a 187-acre site. The facility has one of the highest-volume cargo capacities of any facility in the New York Harbor. The terminal consists of three deepwater container vessel berths, six quayside gantry cranes and 22 full-container handlers. The facility is owned by the City of New York and has been leased by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey since 1985.
