Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $10 billion worth of industrial projects that are presently under construction in New York state, not including offshore wind projects in New York waters. While the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry has set its sights on New York City, other projects such as data centers and food and beverage facilities are underway in the rest of the state.

The largest project presently underway in the state involves the king of cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin. Coinmint LLC will soon wrap up the Phase II expansion of its Bitcoin-mining data center, located at the site of a former Alcoa Corporation (NYSE:AA) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) aluminum smelter in Massena. This expansion adds another 120 megawatts (MW) of power to the energy-intensive facility, helping pave the way for more than 430 MW of power eventually. According to Coinmint's website, the company hopes to expand the data center to be three times the size of the next-largest crypto-mining facility, to be the biggest such facility in the world. A third phase of construction is expected to begin later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the reports on the Phase II and Phase III expansion projects.

Construction on a data center used for colocation services has been underway at the site of a former Verizon facility in Orangeburg since last year. DataBank Limited (Dallas, Texas) is renovating the former Verizon data center, which comes linked to a utility-owned substation providing up to 45 MW of power. The project will expand the building's footprint and establish five data halls, each using 6 MW of power. The project is expected to be completed this summer. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

One of the top pharmaceutical-biotech projects underway in New York City is actually being built by the city itself in Harlem. In 2022, construction manager Skanska (Stockholm, Sweden) began construction on what will be a new public health laboratory by demolishing three existing buildings. In their place will be a new 10-story, 240,000-square-foot building that will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-Silver certified. The facility will be equipped to provide testing and analysis services for microbiology, environmental sciences, toxicology, virology, immunology and more. The project is expected to wrap up in early 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical-Biotech Project Database can click here to learn more.

The Food & Beverage Industry accounts for nearly $900 million in project activity in New York. Many of these involve milk-based products and are located near the state's dairies. French yogurt-maker La Fermiere (Aubagne, France), for example, is hoping to expand its U.S. market presence with construction of its first U.S. facility in Batavia, New York. The company has been working with a New York-based co-packer to release its products to the U.S. market and is now ready to have its own production facility on U.S. soil. The project kicked off last year and entails constructing a 45,000-square-foot building that will use up to 6 million gallons of milk per year to make the company's sustainably packaged yogurt products. According to news media, the new plant will be central to La Fermiere's goal of having its U.S. sales eventually match those in France--10 million tons of finished products annually. The plant is expected to begin operations later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for more details on the project.

While New York's offshore windfarms have lately dominated its energy-related news media, the state's onshore renewable energy projects lean toward solar power. Expected to be completed toward the end of this year is the Morris Ridge solar farm, near Mount Morris in the west of the state, about 60 miles east of Buffalo. The facility is owned by EDF Renewables North America (San Diego, California) and will use more than 330,000 panels manufactured by Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) to generate 177 MW. Seemingly, no U.S. state is without a project or two from e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), and New York boasts at least five that are under construction. In 2020, the first steps toward establishing an Amazon distribution center in Bronx, New York, was when the building at a former multiplex cinema site was demolished. In its place is a multi-level, 840,000-square-foot logistics center that will feature four drive-in doors and 111 loading doors. General contractor Aurora Contractors Incorporated (Ronkonkoma, New York) is expected to complete the project in the coming months. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
