North American Food & Beverage Industry Ramps Up Plans to Build Grassroot Plants

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Food and beverage manufacturers and distributors are ramping up plans to build new manufacturing plants and distribution facilities across North America. Industrial Info has identified 130 grassroot Food & Beverage Industry construction projects that are planned or under construction and are scheduled to be completed by the end of the 2012. The investment values of the projects range from as low as $600,000 up to $160 million. The combined total investment value (TIV) of all projects is about $2.6 billion. Projects are being developed by companies including Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) (Decatur, Illinois), General Mills Incorporated (NYSE:GIS) (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY) (Houston, Texas), US Foods (Rosemont, Illinois), Bunge Limited (NYSE:BG) (White Plains, New York) and many others.

The breakdown of the numbers in terms of scale is as follows: < $10 million (71), < $50 million (50) and < $100 million (7).

Grassroot construction activity will be the highest in the Midwest region, with 21 projects totaling $545 million. The Great Lakes and Southeast regions round out the top three markets with 19 projects worth $247 million, and 16 projects worth $382 million, respectively.

Roughly half of the grassroot projects being tracked by Industrial Info are currently under construction and have a cumulative investment value of $1.8 billion. A $100 million canola oilseed plant near Warden, Washington, started construction at the end of 2011 and is scheduled to be operational in December 2012. In southern Illinois, Bunge is constructing a $40 million grain terminal, which is on schedule to be completed in March.

As 2012 unfolds, some project plans may be delayed or canceled. In addition, Industrial Info expects to add to the list of current project plans.
