Nova Scotia's Last Coal Mine to Close, an Industrial Info Market Brief

Kameron Coal LLC's 3.5 million-ton-per-year Donkin Coal Mine in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, was idled March 30, following two roof collapses within a two-week period in February. No one was hurt in either accident. This was the mine's 12th roof collapse or material rockfall since it began production in February 2017.

All employees were laid off, except for a skeleton crew to keep the mine ventilated and dewatered. Company officials say the mine will not be sealed, but kept on care and maintenance until a final production decision is made. The closure effectively cancels Kameron's future project plans to expand the mine's capacity and add a coal export terminal and barge loadout facility in Morien Bay, Nova Scotia.
