NTPC to Commission 3,640 Megawatts of Power Projects in Maharashtra by 2015

Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--In a bid to curb the burgeoning demand for power in Maharashtra, India's state-run power major NTPC Limited (BSE:532555) (New Delhi) has proposed execution of coal-fired power projects with a total capacity of 3,640 megawatts (MW) by the end of 2015.

NTPC is currently developing a 1,000-MW coal-fired power plant at Mouda, near Nagpur city. The first 500-MW unit of the project is expected to be commissioned by June 2011. NTPC has proposed to further enhance the capacity of the project by installing two 660-MW supercritical coal-fired power units.

Another 1,320-MW project has been proposed to be developed in the Solapur district of the state.

Maharashtra is one of the largest consumers of electricity in the country. However, the availability of power in the state during last year was 102 million megawatt-hours, which was about 19% lower than demand.

During the last week of April 2011, power demand rose to a record 16,500 MW, against the availability of 9,000 MW, leading to a daily power deficit of 5,500 MW.

The state faces peak-hour power shortages of about 3,200 MW. The state government of Maharashtra plans to add 6,935 MW of electricity generation capacity in the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12), while another 4,754 MW is expected to be produced by the private sector.

Upon commissioning, NTPC's new power units are expected to reduce the acute power crisis in the state, as nearly 50% of the power generated from these upcoming power plants will be supplied to Maharashtra.

The state currently has an installed generation capacity of 22,645.29 MW, which comprises 15,813.98 thermal power, 33,31.84 hydropower and 690.14 MW nuclear power. The remaining 2,809.33 MW is harnessed through various renewable sources.

With an installed capacity of 33,194 MW, NTPC is the largest power generating firm in India. Presently, NTPC generates power primarily from coal and gas. The company is diversifying into hydropower, coal mining, power equipment manufacturing, oil and gas exploration, and power trading and distribution.
