Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking four major auto manufacturing projects in Ontario with a combined value of nearly $1.58 billion that will be under construction in 2018.

Canadians are buying more vehicles amid growing household wealth and the fact that 11 million Canadian-owned vehicles on the road are older than 10 years, according to the Toronto Star. These factors are helping to increase domestic sales. Automakers sold more than 187,000 new vehicles in Canada in September, a 7.7% increase from the same month last year, according to Automotive News.

Canada's auto industry faces uncertainty, however, amid talks over reworking the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the U.S. About 85% of all vehicles and auto parts produced in Canada are shipped to the U.S., according to Automotive News.

The largest project currently slated to be under construction next year in Ontario is a $600 million equipment addition and production line at Ford Motor Company of Canada's Essex Engine Plant in Windsor. The new line will produce next-generation, 7.0-litre, V8 engines for large Ford pickup trucks, such as the F-250. The new line is currently scheduled for completion in 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

At Honda of Canada's plant in Allison, Ontario, construction is underway on a $492 million CR-V sports utility vehicle paint shop expansion and assembly line upgrade. Construction began in January, with completion expected in 2019. Gillam Group (Toronto, Ontario) is the general contractor for the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

At Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Incorporated's Cambridge plant in Ontario, a $421 million, 53,380-square-foot building modification project is underway at the North Plastic Division Plant. The project will enhance the plant's design, engineering and production of custom composite parts. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Modatek Systems Incorporated, which is owned by Magna International Incorporated (NYSE:MGA) (Aurora, Ontario), plans to install equipment and production lines at its facility in Milton, Ontario, to produce truck frames for the new 2020 Ford Ranger. The project has a total investment value of $188 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
