Plant officials at Bruce said that an operator manually tripped the 825-megawatt (MW) Unit 3 offline at 8:30 a.m. on September 13, after it became increasingly hot. The temperature rose in the steam turbine due to a degrading condenser vacuum.

The unit is currently in a "hot standby" mode, otherwise called Mode 3. During this mode, the water temperature and the pressure are brought to normal operating levels. Plant officials hope to make the needed repairs and bring the unit back online no later than Sunday night.

Bruce A Nuclear Station consists of four units that generate more than 3,300 MW of electricity. Other units were not affected and remain online, generating at full capacity.
