Over 5,700 Megawatts of Solid-Based Fuel-Generation Being Developed in the Dakotas and Minnesota

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Utility and independent power producers are actively developing over 5,700 megawatts of solid-based fuel (biomass, coal, petroleum coke and wood conventional or gasified) generation with another 2,500 megawatts sitting on the back burner. This new proposed generation is being developed for two reasons: to replace older dirty and inefficient units and to meet area load growth. Currently, there are 30 solid fuel units under development in the three state area of Minnesota, North and South Dakota. Twenty-four units are actively being developed, including four units under construction. Six units have been put on-hold since they were originally reported.
