Panama's Energy Firms Plan 720 Megawatts of Hydroelectric Power

Seventeen of these projects are in a preliminary phase and seven are in an engineering phase, for a total investment of approximately $200 million. The remainder of the projects are under construction for a total investment of about $583 million. According to the program, these power stations are planned to be completed by 2016.

Panama's Agua y Energia (Panama City, Panama) is finishing preliminary design work and is seeking financial closure for the San Andrés II hydropower station in Chiriqui, Panama.

After the documentation submittal to the national authorities, Agua y Energia is waiting for a definitive license to build and operate a hydropower station on the Gariche River. Meanwhile, the company is maintaining discussions with potential financial partners. The facility will be equipped with one Francis horizontal axis hydro turbine to supply 6.8 MW to the local grid.

Agua y Energia is involved with two other projects in the planning phase in the Chiriqui region: the 4.07-MW Chorcha power station and the 7-MW Gualaquita power stations. All three projects represent a total investment of $27 million and are expected to begin operations in 2014.
