Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Unit 1 at the Perry Nuclear Power Station tripped offline on Friday June 29, 2007, due to a recirculation pump malfunction. Officials are in the process of repairing the pump and hope to have the unit online this week.
The Perry Nuclear plant is a 1,250-megawatt (MW) power plant located in Perry, Ohio. This station is jointly owned by four FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE)(Akron, Ohio) subsidiaries: Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, Ohio Edison Company, Toledo Edison Company and Pennsylvania Power Company. This nuclear plant became commercial operational in 1987 with one General Electric (GE) steam turbine and one boiling water reactor boiler and is operated by First Energy Nuclear Operating Company, a subsidiary of First Energy Corporation. Perry Nuclear plant was one of the most expensive power plants ever built in the United States, at around $6 billion.
