Peru's ONP Oil Pipeline Reports Sabotage

Reports related to this article:

Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Petroperu (Lima, Peru) reported that Section 2 of the Oleoducto Norperuano (ONP) oil pipeline was cut on February 8 at kilometer 376 (mile 233) near the Numpatkain community in the district of Santa Maria de Nieva, Amazonas.

The cut was made with a mechanical tool, representing a crime, said the state-owned oil company. The ONP is Peru's largest pipeline, with three sections spanning 1,106 kilometers. It carries oil from the Amazonian oil fields to the Bayovar Terminal on the Pacific coast.

Petroperu has deployed a contingency plan to repair the cut, and has proceeded to close the valves of the ONP between kilometers 406 and 371 (miles 252 and 230) of Section 2 of the pipeline to mitigate any further impacts.

Attacks on the ONP are common. Between January 2023 and April 2024, Section 2 of the pipeline incurred 11 acts of sabotage. As a result, Petroperu has asked authorities to reinforce security along the pipeline.

The pipeline's massive length and remote location have made it vulnerable to sabotage. In the past, local communities have taken over pump stations and key infrastructure along the asset as a protest.
