Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Petroperu (Lima, Peru) says Peru's longest pipeline was sabotaged twice this month. On Saturday, the state-owned oil company said it had mobilized a team to Section II of the Oleoducto Norperuano (ONP) Pipeline to respond to an attack that resulted in an oil spill. This marks the second recent attack in Section II, after the company found some cuts on the ONP in the Condorcanqui province in early March.

Following the incidents, Petroperu urged police to protect the ONP. Siphoning and cutting incidents are not uncommon on the ONP; Petroperu has reported these incidents over the years, which, in some circumstances, lead to oil spills.

According to Petroperu, 11 attacks, including Friday's event, have been recorded in Section II of the ONP since January 2023. Additionally, the company said Section II has been under scheduled shutdown since December 29, 2023, due to low crude inventory levels.

The ONP is Peru's largest pipeline, with three sections spanning 1,106 kilometers. It carries oil from the Amazonian oil fields to the Bayovar Terminal on the Pacific coast. Section I stretches through the Loreto department for 306 kilometers (190 miles), while the Ramal Norte, also located in Loreto, has a length of 252 kilometers (156 miles).

Section II of the ONP has a 36-inch diameter and a length of 548 kilometers (340 miles) from the Amazonas state to the Bayovar Terminal, where Petroperu exports oil.

According to information published by Perupetro, the nation's energy regulator, Peru produced 43,000 barrels of oil per day (BBL/d) in January. This is slightly higher than the 38,700 BBL/d recorded throughout last year.

Petroperu reports 17% of the total oil production in January came from its I(TT), VI(T), and Z-69(T) oil blocks in the Amazonian region, and its production soon could increase further with the start of operations at Block 192.

In February, Petroperu confirmed Altamesa (Montreal, Quebec) as its strategic partner in Block 192, which has been offline for years. The companies plan to drill 21 new wells at Block 192 as part of the first restart phase.
