Power Generators Volunteer Over 2,900 MW of New Generation to Tennessee Electrical Power Grid

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). There is currently over 22,600 megawatts of operational power generation of all fuel types in Tennessee. A handful of companies are planning new generation capacity that, if built, will increase capacity by 2,900 MW (12.8%) to about 25,500 MW.

Planned new generation in Tennessee accounts for only 8% of the planned 36,000 MW of new generation planned in the U.S. Southeast market region, which consists of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) is volunteering the addition of six additional units at three existing generating stations equaling about 2,400 MW. In addition, the ERORA Group LLC (Louisville, Kentucky) is planning a 500 MW grassroot natural-gas fired combined-cycle power plant. The combined-cycle units being studied consist of two combustion turbine/generators (CT), two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) and a steam turbine/generator (ST).

TVA is studying the completion of the Watts Bar 2 reactor in Rhea County, Tennessee. The plant is about 95% finished, but with changes in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s regulations, there will be a need for extensive license and structural modifications so it may be 2014 before it could be brought online. TVA is also studying additions at two peaking plants, the Gleason Peaking Station in Weakley County, Tennessee and the Lagoon Creek Peaking Station in Haywood County, Tennessee. TVA is considering converting some of Gleason’s CTs to combined-cycle units with the addition of HRSGs and STs. In addition, at the Lagoon Creek Station TVA is looking at installing a brand new combined-cycle unit.

The ERORA Group has been studying the possibility of installing a grassroot natural gas-fired combined-cycle plant in Gibson County, Tennessee. The plant is currently on hold while ERORA pursues more economically feasible projects in Illinois and Kentucky, but it is still being considered for possible operations in 2012 or later.
