Prairie Pride Expects to Begin Biodiesel Production in Missouri by Month's End

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Cooperative-owned biodiesel start-up Prairie Pride Incorporated (Deerfield, Missouri) is putting final touches on and testing equipment its new biodiesel plant in Nevada, Missouri. The company anticipates starting production at the plant by the end of the month.

The plant was engineered by Engineering Automation & Design Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska) and built by A-Lert Construction Services (Fredonia, Kansas). Construction on the plant started in October of last year, and the biodiesel plant portion is nearly ready to go into operation. The plant also includes a soybean-crushing and oil-extraction plant that is not expected to be completed until February or March of 2008. Until the crusher is operational, Prairie Pride will purchase oil feedstock to produce the fuel.

About 21 million bushels of soybeans will be processed annually at the plant, which will produce 30 million gallons per year of biodiesel and soybean meal. Construction costs to build the plant are in the $72 million range.

Biodiesel production has been on the rise in Missouri, and the state now has three plants running. Ag Processing Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska) recently completed construction of a 28 million-gallon-per-year biodiesel plant at its existing soybean refinery in Saint Joseph. Mid-America Biofuels LLC operates a 30 million-gallon-per-year plant in Mexico and Global Fuels operates a small 3 million-gallon-per-year plant in Dexter.

Paseo Biofuels LLC is also building a 37 million-gallon-per-year plant in Kansas City that is expected to be operational soon. Other plants are planned to be built in Rock Port, Carrollton, Fulton and Saint Joseph.
