Pratt Industries Selects Louisiana for $150 Million G-R Recycled Fiber Containerboard Mill

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The world’s largest privately held paper and packaging company, Pratt Industries, Incorporated, (Sydney, Australia) has selected Shreveport, Louisiana for the site of its newest containerboard mill in the U.S. Pratt plans to invest $150 million in building and equipment processes designed to produce over 400,000 tons-per-year of containerboard derived from 100% recycled content paper. Containerboard will be distributed to the company’s network of plants that will convert that containerboard into boxes. In addition to the Shreveport site, Pratt operates containerboard mills in Conyers, Georgia and Staten Island, New York.

The mill will be constructed on an 85-acre site at the Port of Shreveport-Bossier, which is an inland multimodal transportation and distribution center that is situated on a 2,000-acre site, four miles south of Shreveport. Dallas-Fort Worth was a leading contender among several cities and states as possible sites for the new plant.

Site preparation is slated to begin next month, followed by approximately fourteen to sixteen months of construction leading up to startup of the plant at the end of 2008. Pratt Industries plan to contract engineering and construction services utilizing local and national resources. Once operational, the plant will employ 115 workers in full-time positions.

Over the years, Industrial Info released several project reports related to plans by Pratt Industries to build new plants in New York and Georgia including expansion plans of the New York plant several years after startup. Most recently, Industrial Info detailed plans by Visy Industries, a subsidiary of Pratt Industries, to invest over $400 million towards the expansion of a pulp mill in Tumut, Australia that is scheduled to come online in the first half of 2009.
