Public Service of New Hampshire Renewable Energy Projects Stymied by State Legislature
The Northern Wood Power Project that replaced the Schiller #5 coal boiler was allowed by the state legislature, because it was to lower the air emissions from the station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) After the successful conversion of Unit #5 at the Schiller Power Station in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from coal to biomass/wood, the Public Service Company of New Hampshire (PSNH) (Manchester, New Hampshire), a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities System (NYSE:NU)(Hartford, Connecticut), is looking to proceed with the development of two more 50-megawatt (MW) biomass/wood-fired power plants. For more information on the Schiller Power Station unit conversion see related November 17, 2004 news article - http://www.industrialinfo.com/showNews.jsp?newsitemID=52637 New Hampshire Utility Proceeds with Conversion of Power Unit from Coal to Wood Fired.
Deregulation of power generation in New Hampshire has led to the deference of new projects by utilities. The Northern Wood Power Project that replaced the Schiller #5 coal boiler was allowed by the state legislature, because it was to lower the air emissions from the station. Once the project was completed and it was determined that the emissions were indeed lower, PSNH approached the legislature to approve further wood/biomass units to provide additional renewable energy to the grid. The failure of the New Hampshire legislature to pass additional laws this last session allowing utilities to develop new projects is stopping PSNH from further developing other renewable projects. The utility says it will now be at least nine months before they could continue with the development of two 50 MW biomass/wood-fired units in the state.
