R-3 Energy Gets Biodiesel Certification; Kansas Plant to Produce 1.4 Million Gallons per Year

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held biodiesel start-up R-3 Energy LLC (Cottonwood Falls, Kansas) has received fuel certification and is increasing production at a new biodiesel plant in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. The small producer is ramping up production to 1.4 million gallons of capacity during the next few weeks, and is currently producing the fuel from chicken fat feedstocks.

Construction of the plant started about a year ago and was completed in July, but the plant could not begin selling fuel until the production equipment met certification. The plant produces B99, which is essentially pure biodiesel, but recommends blends of B50 when the outdoor temperature is in the 40- to 50-degree range, and a B20 blend when it is in the 20- to 40-degree range. In colder temperatures, the fuel can crystallize and cause filter clogging.

The company can also produce the fuel from soybean oil, and is targeting the local farming community as their primary market.

R-3 is the second biodiesel plant operating in Kansas. Healy Biodiesel began operating a 1.2 million-gallon-per-year plant in June 2007 and utilizes animal fats and restaurant grease as feedstock. Kansas now has the capacity of producing more than 2.6 million gallons of biodiesel annually.
