Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Rocky Mountains market region, which includes Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, is seeing an influx of Power Industry projects in the upcoming first quarter of 2021. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1.3 billion in planned power projects in the region that are planned to kick off in the first quarter. Nevada, with 11 projects valued at more than $865 million, leads in terms of project value and count.

What lifts Nevada into the lead in the region is a number of solar projects, including NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) Fish Springs solar farm near Reno. The 100-megawatt (MW) facility will be built on a 180-acre site and use 5,200 Signet thin-film solar panels. Accompanying the Fish Springs facility will be a 25-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) using lithium-ion batteries to help store the facility's power when the sun is not shining. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of the upcoming year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the solar farm and BESS.

Other planned solar farms in Nevada include renewable powerhouse Invenergy's (Chicago, Illinois) 190-MW facility in the Lovelock (see project report) and 150-MW facility in Crescent Valley (see project report).

While most BESS projects under construction accompany solar facilities, Invenergy plans to build one to accompany a natural gas-fired power plant in Arizona. The 50-MW El Sol BESS will be built next to Arizona Public Service's (Phoenix) Redhawk gas-fired plant in Arlington, about 45 miles west of Phoenix. The project is expected to kick off early in the quarter and be completed toward the beginning of summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

While the construction of grassroot natural gas-fired power plants has decreased as renewables come into favor, work must continue at existing plants. Public Service Company of New Mexico (Albuquerque) will be upgrading the 44-MW Unit 1 gas turbine at the Reeves Power Station in Albuquerque to improve efficiency and service life. The project entails the replacement of the nozzle block and examination of the blades and cooling system. The project is expected to be completed in the first half of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Coal-fired facilities also must be maintained, and Xcel Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) will be refurbishing the boiler of the 190-MW Unit 1 at its facility in Hayden, Colorado. The project includes replacing the superheat and reheat sections and waterwall sections to improve reliability and service life. The project is expected to be completed in the first half of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Key to generating assets is the transmission and distribution infrastructure to allow the electricity to reach consumers. Xcel hopes to resolve potential transmission and voltage stability issues in a region of New Mexico with its upcoming Roadrunner-Phantom-China Draw transmission project. A 42-mile, single-circuit overhead transmission line will be constructed between two existing substations and the new 345-kilowatt Phantom substation, which also will kick off construction in the upcoming quarter. Construction on both projects is expected to be completed by the end of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the transmission line and substation.
