Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Rocky Mountains market region leads the U.S. in the value of planned fourth-quarter 2020 project starts for the Power Industry. Industrial Info is tracking more than $7.3 billion in planned project starts in the region, which includes Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. As with other U.S. regions, renewable energy, in this case wind, leads the way for the value of projects.

New Mexico, with more than $4 billion in planned project starts, leads the region in terms of project value.

Among the largest planned projects is a massive wind project in New Mexico that, as a whole, includes six separate windfarms, most of which will be capable of generating 200 megawatts (MW), but dip as low as 20 MW. The facilities will be located near Corona, about 100 miles southeast of Albuquerque. The project is owned by multinational private equity firm Riverstone Holdings (New York, New York). Construction is expected to kick off early in the quarter and take a little more than a year to complete. Upon completion, the facilities will generate more than 1 gigawatt. Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services. Each windfarm also will include a collector substation, and there will be 80 miles of 345-kilovolt overhead transmission line that will connect the windfarms to the grid. Among the more "normal" size wind projects planned to kick off in the region in the upcoming quarter is Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) Uinta County Windfarm in southeastern Wyoming. The facility will use 144 General Electric (NYSE:GE) 3.6-MW wind turbines to generate approximately 160 MW. Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:J) (Dallas, Texas) is performing design-engineering work on the project, which is expected to wrap up in the third quarter of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Some large solar projects help propel Nevada into second position in regard to project value. Among these is Arevia Power's (Redwood City, California) 440-MW Gemini I solar plant, located about 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The project is the first phase of a planned two-phase project. The second phase will add approximately 250 MW of capacity. Construction on the first phase is expected to be completed next summer, around the time when the second phase will kick off. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I and Phase II.

While grassroot coal-fired construction has ground to a halt in the U.S., maintenance and renovations at operational facilities continue. Among the coal-fired projects kicking off in the Rockies next quarter is Tucson Electric Power Company's (Tucson, Arizona) revamp of a boiler at its power station in Springerville, Arizona. The project entails replacing major components on the boiler of the 425-MW Unit 1, which began operating in 1985. Total Western Incorporated (Paramount, California) is the contractor on the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of the quarter. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

A couple of projects are planned for Pinnacle West Capital's (NYSE:PNW) (Phoenix, Arizona) 1,311-MW Palo Verde nuclear power station in Tonopah, Arizona. An approximately 44-day refueling outage is planned and overlapping with this, a generator stator rewind. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report on the refueling and generator stator rewind.
