Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Since its founding in 1938, Ryan Companies US Incorporated (Minneapolis, Minnesota) has become one of the leading general contracting firms in the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking more than $3.5 billion worth of U.S. projects involving Ryan. While the projects range across a variety of industrial sectors, lucrative relationships with e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) and other grocery and retail outlets add a substantial amount to Ryan's project mix.
Industrial Info is tracking no less than 15 active Amazon projects in the U.S. in which Ryan Companies is playing a role. Two of the largest are set to be completed this year in Louisiana and Indiana, both of which will make substantial use of robotics to help pick, pack and ship smaller consumer items, such as books, toys and electronics. Ryan began work on Project Cosmeaux in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 2021, and the 3.4 million-square-foot facility is expected to be completed in the coming months. Construction began on Project Winnie in Elkhart, Indiana, in early 2022. The five-story, 4 million-square-foot fulfillment center is expected to be completed toward the beginning of this summer.
Ryan's active Amazon projects are spread throughout the U.S., with the exception of the U.S. Northeast and New England regions. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the project reports on the Louisiana and Indiana projects.
Over the past few decades, Ryan has constructed many facilities for Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) (Minneapolis) and is at work on a grassroot distribution center in Sacramento, California, for the retail chain. The 525,000-square-foot facility will include more than 25,000 square feet of office space and a 7,400-square-foot trailer-maintenance building. Construction on the project began last summer and is expected to last until the end of this year. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
Distribution and warehousing projects account for more than $1.4 billion worth of Ryan's project mix, one of the largest of which is for the Food & Beverage Industry. In 2022, Hilmar (Hilmar, California) company executives and Kansas governor Laura Kelly (D) broke ground for the site of what will be a new cheese and whey processing plant in Dodge City, Kansas, paving the way for Ryan to begin general contracting services on the facility. The addition of the 600,000-square-foot plant is having a knock-on effect on the region's dairies, which are preparing for the new milk demand by expanding.
"In addition to the expansion of several local dairies, three new dairies are coming to the area to support the Dodge City site," Wesley Eveland, director of procurement at Hilmar, told local media. "We're excited to see all the growth in the local community." Hilmar has other plants in California and Texas and produces cheeses such as cheddar, Monterey jack, Colby and more, as well as whey, which is used in many products, including nutritional beverages and bars. The Dodge City plant is expected to be fully operational later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for more information.
While fewer and further between than the company's work in other sectors, Ryan also is at work on projects in the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry. Among the company's notable projects in this field is a manufacturing and research & development facility for medical devices manufactured by Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE:BSX) (Marlborough, Massachusetts). The development will be built in phases, with the first phase featuring a three-story building with 80,000 square feet of wet laboratory space and training facilities to support manufacturing various medical and surgical devices, such as ballon catheters, stents and interventional cardiology and urology products. Phase I is expected to be completed in late 2026.
Ryan Companies also is involved in the planned second-phase construction of the facility, which could begin after completion of Phase I and entails expanding the building by 150,000 square feet, including an additional 20,000 square feet of wet lab space. Should this stage of the project begin as planned, completion is expected in 2027. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharma-Biotech Project Database can learn more from the project reports on Phase I and Phase II.
Ryan also is involved in a rail-transit project in Hagerstown, Maryland, about 70 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. Ryan is building a railcar-manufacturing plant that will produce carriages for Hitachi Rail (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) for use by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). The plant, on track for completion in the coming months, initially will manufacture 256 new 8000-Series railcars for WMATA, then up to 20 railcars a month for trains ranging from metro to high-speed services.
