Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Alstom Power (Paris, France) and Doosan Babcock (Renfrew, Scotland) will provide the design input for the supercritical turbines that are covered in a feasibility study being carried out by ScottishPower (Glasgow, Scotland) to convert its two largest power stations to clean coal technology. The project, which would be the largest in Europe of its type, would see the new turbine and boiler sets fitted at the Longannet and Cockenzie power plants.
The new supercritical configuration, burning coal at ultra-high temperatures, may be built within the existing power station buildings in the counties of Fife and East Lothian. The power stations which have a total generation capacity of 3,390 MW, more than a quarter of Scotlands needs, would have carbon emission s reduced by 20%. The two power stations would continue to operate at reduced capacity during the 19 month project development while the new facility is constructed.
The scheme has been under development for three years and the commissioning of the project builds on the current $170 million installation of flue gas desulfurization at Longannet and will push ScottishPower into the forefront of international clean-coal technology. If the proposal gets the go ahead, construction could start in 2009, with operations beginning in 2012. This would further extend the lives of both plants and provide Scotland with low-carbon base-load electricity for the foreseeable future. The clean coal plants would also provide efficient and flexible support for Scotlands developing renewable generation program.
The refitted power stations will be designed to incorporate the carbon capture technology which is currently being developed at Longannet. This scheme involves pumping carbon emissions from the power station into deep underground coal seams to drive out methane gas which can be used as fuel. The carbon emissions remain trapped in the coal seams.
In the last week of April the integration of Iberdrola (OTC:IBDRF) (Madrid, Spain) and ScottishPower was formalized. This created one of the largest energy companies in the world with a total enterprise value of $ 87 billion. The two companies have a combined installed capacity of around 40,000 MW and are world leaders with 16,500 MW of renewable energy output capacity. They serve 21 million consumers in Europe and the Americas.
