SEPTA Plans $51 Million Commuter Rail Extension to Wawa, Pennsylvania

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). In order to take advantage of the growth in Western Delaware County, Pennsylvania, SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is planning a $51 million commuter rail extension to Wawa, Pennsylvania. The project will involve the construction of three miles of new track from Elwyn, Pennsylvania to Wawa, Pennsylvania, and the construction of a new commuter rail station at Wawa. In addition, it will be necessary to install a new bi-directional signal system, a new communications system, construct multiple new grade crossings, and as needed, repair, replace or construct new bridges along the route.

URS Corporation (NYSE:URS) (New York, New York) was selected to perform the design and engineering for the proposed project. Design is currently underway and should be completed in the summer of 2007. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2008, with the new commuter rail extension becoming operational in 2009.

SEPTA was formed in 1964 by the Pennsylvania General Assembly to provide public transportation solutions for Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania. Over the years, SEPTA has acquired several regional transportation agencies including the Philadelphia Transportation Company (PTC), the Schuylkill Valley Lines and the Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company. SEPTA is the nation’s fifth largest public transportation system providing bus, subway & elevated, trackless trolley, light rail and commuter rail service to a 2,200 square-mile region. SEPTA employs approximately 9,000 people.
