Shin Kori Nuclear Power Station Now Online in South Korea

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Shin Kori (Gori) Nuclear Power Station, which is in Busan, South Korea, began commercial operations at of the end of November 2010. Unit 1 began generating power and was successfully connected to the regional grid as of August 4, 2010. Preliminary construction of units 1 and 2 began in 2005, though Unit 2 is not expected to be complete until later this year.

Unit 1 was loaded on May 29, 2010, and went into primary criticality shortly thereafter. It remained offline until pilot tests were concluded and capacity was brought up to 1,000 megawatts (MW), and it began commercial production in November. Units 1 and 2 will feature OPR-1000 light water reactor technology developed by Korea Electric Power Corporation (NYSE:KEP) (KEPCO) (Seoul), which currently operates South Korea's four existing nuclear power stations.

Korea Hydro and Nuclear, in association with Doosan Engineering and Construction Limited (KS:011160) (Seoul) and Hyundai Engineering and Construction Limited (KRX:000720) (Seoul), is also preparing to begin construction on two other units to be incorporated at Shin Kori power station. Units 3 and 4, however, will feature APR-1400 reactors. The APR-1400 was developed in South Korea and is a type of advanced pressurized water reactor (PWR).

When fully completed in 2018, Shin Kori is expected to generate approximately 5,600 MW. Shin Ko-ri is adjacent to the original Kori nuclear power station, which began operations in 1979. Kori power station has a capacity of 3 gigawatts and utilizes PWRs. South Korea ranks sixth in terms of global nuclear power generation and has become a world leader in the sector. The country kick-started exportation of nuclear technology when it was selected to supply four APR-1400 reactors to the United Arab Emirates in 2009. Since then, South Korea has agreed to provide nuclear reactor technology to Jordon as well.
