Sid Richardson Starts Construction of 24-Megawatt Waste Heat Fired Cogen at Texas Carbon Black Manufacturing Plant

Sid Richardson Carbon & Energy Company (Fort Worth, Texas) has commenced site preparation for a 24-megawatt (MW) power generating unit addition at its Big Spring, Texas carbon black manufacturing site. The Industrial Company (TIC), based in Steamboat, Colorado, was selected to perform the general construction contract.

The new unit will consist of adding a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) manufactured by Rentech Boiler Systems out of Abilene, Texas, and a Siemens steam turbine generator. The HRSG will utilize the Waste Heat energy generated from a by-product gas stream of the carbon black process to produce an estimated 21MW of electricity. Approximately half of the electricity will be used by the Big Spring, Texas plant, which consists of three carbon black production units producing over 800 million pounds per year, and the additional electricity will be sold under contract to the merchant market.

Lauren Engineers and Constructors Incorporated (Abilene, Texas) provided the design and engineering services for this new unit. Equipment tie-ins will be completed during a February 2006 ten-day turnaround. Sid Richardson expects to have the unit in commercial operation by April 2006.
