Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The recently launched 1,071-megawatt (MW) TNB Prai combined-cycle power plant (CCPP) project in Seberang Perai, Penang state, Malaysia, will be powered by two Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) H-class turbines, each rated at 535.5 MW.
Samsung C&T (KL) Sdn Bhd (KSX:000830:KS) (Seoul, South Korea) (formerly Samsung E&C) will construct the $1.05 billion gas-fired power plant on a lump-sum-turnkey basis. The company placed the turbine order with Siemens; it included two water- and hydrogen-cooled SGen5-3000W generators and two SST5-5000 triple-pressure steam turbines. Siemens' contract to supply the equipment is valued at $200 million. Siemens also has signed a long-term maintenance contract for the components.
The project is being executed for Tenaga Northern Bhd, a fully owned subsidiary of Malaysian utility company TNB Nasional Berhad. Prai CCPP is said to be the most powerful and efficient gas-fired power plant project in the Southeast Asian region. Completion date for the project is scheduled for the first quarter of 2016.
The H-class turbines provide top-line operating performance and efficiency. In 2011, the turbine set a world record with an efficiency rating of 60.75% and a generating capacity of 578 MW. In commercial operations, it has an availability of more than 97%. The Malaysian order increases the number of H-class turbines sold worldwide to 22.
