Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--German engineering giant Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) has clinched three wind turbine deals in Scotland with a combined generation capacity of 126 -megawatts (MW).
The company has secured contracts to supply a total of 57 turbines for onshore wind projects at Dersalloch in the South Ayrshire region;, the Ewe Hill project, which is located about 15 -kilometers (km) from Lockerbie in Dumfries and Galloway; and the Millour Hill Community windfarm development in North Ayrshire.
"With their combined rating of 126 MW, these three projects will provide reliable, clean energy for the region, equivalent to the demand of both Scotland's Orkney and Shetland Islands," said Siemens Wind Power and Renewables Onshore Chief Executive Officer Thomas Richterich.
At the Dersalloch project, Siemens will construct, install and commission 23 units of its D3 direct drive wind turbines for a combined capacity of 69 -MW. It will also provide ongoing servicing and maintenance. Installation will start next year, and the project is expected to be handed over later in the year to project owner ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) (Glasgow, Scotland), part of Spanish energy major Iberdrola S.A. (MCE:IBE) (Bilbao, Spain).
Siemens will supply six of its SWT-2.3-93 wind turbines to the Ewe Hill Phase 1 project near Lockerbie. An additional 16 of the same turbines will be installed for Phase II of the project. Both sites will have a combined generating capacity of 51-MW. Phase I will be completed in 2016, and Phase II is expected to go live in 2017.
For the Millour Hill Community wind project, the company will deliver two SWT-3.2-101 turbines. There are already six of the 3-MW-rated wind turbines installed there, as the site was the pilot location for the first D3 products in the U.K., three years ago.
Earlier this year, Siemens and ScottishPower Renewables inked the largest wind energy deal in U.K. history, when Siemens was contracted to supply 102 of its new 7-MW turbines for the £2 billion ($3.1 billion) East Anglia ONE windfarm off the southeast coast of England.
