Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tuas Power Lte Limited (Tuas) (Singapore), established in 1995 as an electricity-generating member of China Huaneng Group, is constructing the Tembusu Multi-Utilities Complex (TMUC) in Tembusu Industrial Zone, on Jurong Island in Singapore.
Tuas has an installed capacity of more than 2,700 megawatts (MW) and enjoys a 24% share in Singapore's electricity generation market. TMUC will be involved in the desalination of seawater and the production of steam and power, utilizing a circulation fluidized bed that is fired by biomass and coal in a 20:80 ratio.
Tuas has selected palm kernel shell, which is abundant in Southeast Asia, to serve as the biomass base, though the company plans to import any required difference. Singapore has adopted clean-coal technologies over the years, and Tuas will incorporate them into the new complex. Though biomass is carbon-neutral and leaves little to no residue, Tuas is working on a deal to sell off coal ash for utilization in cement manufacturing.
The $2 billion TMUC is scheduled to be completed during the first quarter of 2014, after which it is anticipated to produce 182,000 cubic meters of desalinated water a day through the use of Hyflux Membrane-based technology. Hyflux Limited (Singapore) is involved in water management and was involved in the development of Singapore's first desalination plant, which was commissioned in 2005. The multi-utilities complex also will produce 200 tons per hour of steam and 160 megawatts of electricity. Tuas claims that the complex will have an efficiency of 70%, and the company plans to recycle electricity to adjacent industrial facilities and supply excess energy to the regional grid.
Singapore relies on 10% of its water to be supplied through the desalination of seawater. Singapore's government has identified at least five additional potential sites for future plants and hopes to produce at least 1 million cubic meters per day by 2060. Singapore has the potential to become a major hub for desalination and water recycling technologies. Another company, in association with Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Berlin, Germany), is funding research for membrane development, water treatment and combination heating/cooling/desalination plants.
