Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Kofu-shi, Japan)--SK Energy (Seoul) is preparing for a May turnaround at its Ulsan refinery, located approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Seoul. Turnaround maintenance and repairs will involve the 60,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Crude Unit 1.
Ulsan refinery, which has a throughput capacity of 840,000 BBL/d, suffered an explosion that led to one fatality and several hospitalization in the early morning hours on December 20 of last year. No direct damage to the refinery was sustained or reported, and operations resumed immediately.
SK Energy, part of the SK Group, is considered to be largest refiner in South Korea. It owns and operates two refineries, one in Ulsan and one in Incheon, for a total capacity exceeding 1 million BBL/d. On April 26, one of the desulphurization units at Incheon refinery suffered a fire following an explosion, and was temporarily shut down. The shutdown is expected to last until the exact cause of the fire can be determined.
Last year, exports of South Korean refined products rose by more than 30% with SK Energy accounting for the majority. The Seoul-based company also deals in technology and is now actively pursuing rechargeable battery development as well.
