Smead Closes Plant in McGregor, Texas, Forcing 139 Out of Jobs

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Paper products company Smead Manufacturing (Hastings, Minnesota) recently announced the closing of its 181,000-square-foot production and distribution plant in McGregor, Texas, which is 15 miles southwest of Waco. Since 1971, Smead has produced office folders and other organizational products in McGregor.

Plant Manager Garland Cook said the facility will remain open through December 2010, which is a busy time for the company, but likely will shut down during the first quarter of 2011. A review of current and future needs of the plant showed that it has more capacity than is necessary. The demand for paper folders has declined as more people use computers for file storage and retrieval.

Cook said the 139 employees at the McGregor plant have demonstrated strong commitment and loyalty during its 40-year run, and that Smead plans to work very hard to assist them in finding new careers. Inventory and machinery will be relocated to other company facilities.
