Construction began on the 270-megawatt (MW) Snowtown windfarm in October 2012. The windfarm consists of 90 advanced, gearless-drive wind turbines and 53-metre-long rotor blades, both of which are supplied by Siemens AS (NYSE:SI).
The plant is an expansion of a 90-MW windfarm that began operations at Barunga in Snowtown, 150 kilometres north of Adelaide in 2008. Construction of the 90-MW windfarm took nearly two years and included 47 Suzlon S88 wind turbines, each of 2.1 MW.
Siemens is providing engineering, procurement and construction services. Siemens awarded a contract to E&A Contractors Pty Limited (Adelaide) for the supply and manufacture of wind towers; an electrical contract to Consolidated Power Projects Pty Limited (Adelaide); and a civil works subcontract to Civil & Allied Technical Construction Pty Limited (Adelaide). Construction for 28 kilometres of 275-kilovolt (kV) overhead line, which will run to a new substation 7 kilometres west of Blyth, is under way and on track.
Construction on the 270-MW windfarm will finish by August and will undergo testing and commissioning activities. It is expected to be fully operational by the end of the third quarter.
The project has reached several milestones and is ahead of schedule, with full plant operations planned for September 2014. Trustpower Australia's General Manager, Peter Calderwood, says Trustpower is delighted with the smooth progress. He said that the windfarm will provide enough energy to power up to 180,000 homes, and provide 120 jobs to the local community.
