Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--The Palmer Windfarm is being designed to supply 390 megawatts (MW) of clean, renewable energy to Mannum, South Australia. The windfarm will generate new streams of income for farmers and other local businesses by employing 250 to 300 people during construction and 12 to 15 people for continuing operations. It is being developed by TrustPower Australia Holdings Pty Limited (South Australia), in collaboration with Mid-Murray Council.
The Palmer Windfarm is being proposed for construction in the Mount Lofty Ranges between the Palmer, Tungkillo and Sanderston substations in Mannum on an approximately 10,000-hectare site, with a total capital cost of $700 million. Trust Power has been monitoring the wind on this site for more than three years.
"The site has been selected as a result of our wind-monitoring program, its geographic isolation and due to its close proximity to the Tungkillo substation," said Rodney Ahern, a business development manager for TrustPower.
Trust Power finished preliminary investigations and is progressing with detailed planning application studies and community consultation to determine the actual design for the project. According to the initial plan, the windfarm will consist of 130 turbines and will generate 390 MW of electricity, which is expected to change based on the final investigations. Trust Power will submit the planning application, following the consultation process, by end of 2013.
On Wednesday, September 25, TrustPower met with the Mid-Murray Council to present them with a proposal for the Palmer Windfarm. The current construction works will establish a connection between the windfarm and the Tungkillo substation through 275-kilovolt (kV) and 33-kV overhead transmission lines and two substations.
TrustPower Australia Holdings Pty Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of TrustPower Limited (Tauranga, New Zealand), a publicly owned company, operating in Australia and New Zealand. Trust Power's Snowtown II windfarm project is under construction, while Snowtown 1 has been operating since 2008.
