Solvay Selects Engineer for Major Sulfone Polymers Expansion

Solvay has yet to announce the selected location of this estimated $50 million expansion project

Released Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Solvay Advanced Polymers LLC (Alpharetta, Georgia), a subsidiary of Solvay America Incorporated (Houston, Texas), has selected Stone & Webster Canada Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario) as the engineer to provide front-end loading for its planned expansion of polyethersulfone (PES) capacity. Industrialinfo.com has been tracking the progress of this project as part of its North American Projects Database since early 2004.

Solvay has yet to announce the selected location of this estimated $50 million expansion project, although Marietta, Ohio, appears to be high on the list of preferred sites for this major unit addition. Solvay's plant site in Texas is also likely under consideration, due to its easy access to feedstock and energy in the petrochemical-rich Gulf Coast region. Capital approval is tentatively expected in May 2005, with civil construction beginning as soon as September 2005. Commercial operation is planned to begin in the fall of 2006.

This new PES unit is planned to produce a line of Solvay's RADEL® products, including a product called RADEL® A and a polyphenylsulfone product named RADEL® R. These products and others expected from the new unit are targeted for use in automotive lighting, aerospace, electronics, and consumer electric products.
