Southwest U.S. New Industrial Building Construction Kick-Offs to Exceed 6 Million Square Feet in 2003

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources Incorporated; Houston, Texas). In the southwest U.S., construction of over 6 million square feet of industrial building activity has been identified to kick-off in the year 2003. In a project survey conducted by Industrialinfo.com, 27 industrial projects representing over $793 million in total expenditures will require building construction associated with their project activity. Twelve of the projects will represent grassroot construction, where the remaining fifteen will account for plant expansions and additions.

Of the industries moving forward with industrial building related projects, sixteen of the projects range from automobile plants, steel tank fabricators, marine facilities, distribution warehouses, and a plastic injection molding plant. The growing pharmaceutical and biotech industry continues to increase momentum, with over one million square feet of building construction activity. Other leading industries include the food & beverage Industry, accounting for over one million square feet of construction in the state of Oklahoma alone. Projects include a food processing plant by Advance Food Company, a new 100,000 square foot lunchmeat plant by Bar-S Foods Company, and an 890,000 square foot food distribution center for Wal-Mart.

States making up the Southwest region include: Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Texas ranked first with over 2.9 million square feet of building construction and 16 of the 27 projects accounting for the most opportunities. In Shreveport, General Motors Corporation is planning to expand their truck assembly operation with a new 1.7 million square foot building addition. Gilbane Building Company (Shreveport, Louisiana) is currently managing the building portion of the project.

Over all, Industrialinfo.com identified 280 projects in the U.S. with requirements for new industrial building construction in 2003. These projects represent $9.6 billion in capital expenditures.
