SRP’s Navajo Station Extends Outage Due to Major Boiler Damage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Salt River Project’s (SRP) Navajo Generating Station announced today that it will extend its current unplanned outage on unit 02 until January 2007. During inspections this past weekend, engineers have discovered extensive damage to several boiler tubes. They have also discovered damage to the outside insulation of several boiler wall panels, which will require welding. The current projections are to have the tubes replaced and the panels welded by the first week in January 2007. This outage has been ongoing since earlier this month.

The Navajo Power Station is located on the Navajo Indian Reservation near Paige, Arizona. The station provides electricity for customers in Arizona, Nevada, and California. The station consists of three 750 MW coal-fired units with a maximum capacity of 2,250 megawatts. Plant construction began in 1969 and the first unit began producing electricity in 1974. Construction costs were $650 million, which includes $200 in environmental control equipment. An additional $420 million was spent on new scrubber equipment in the 1990’s. Each unit has its own scrubber and the Navajo station ranks among one of the cleanest coal-fired power plants in the country.

The Navajo Generating Station is owned by the Salt River Project (SRP). SRP consists of two entities: the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District, a subdivision of the state of Arizona; and the Salt River Valley Water User’s Association, a private corporation. The district provides electricity to more than 900,000 customers in the Phoenix area. It participates in the operations of eleven major power plants and numerous other generating stations including thermal, natural gas, and hydroelectric sources. SRP’s net revenue for 2005 was $362 million.
