State Grid Ultra High Voltage DC Test Line Put into Official Operation

The Ultra High Voltage DC Test Line of the State Grid Corporation of China (Beijing, China) was fully energized with voltage up to 800KV and maintained at stable current successfully on June 28, 2007. Both noises at the DC field and the test field are far below the national specification on environmental noise. “The Ultra High Voltage DC Test Line of State Grid Corporation was successfully put into operation!” announced by Zhang Wenliang, President of China Electric Power Research Institute (Beijing, China).

The test line built in the Ultra High Voltage DC Test Base is the longest DC test line with dual circuits built at the same tower and the highest DC voltage ever built in the world. The test line is 1,084 meters long, with a total of six foundation towers, including terminal tower, pole changing tower, two gantry towers and two anchoring towers. The gantry tower is 88 meters high, 80 meters wide, and is furnished with two layers of movable beam that allow test conductors to be adjusted both in vertical and horizontal.

Main functions of the test line include: (1) to verify the electromagnetic environment of the conductor selected for the ±800 kV DC transmission line; (2) Together with the test for corona, to finalize the method on the predication of electromagnetic environment along ultra high voltage DC transmission line applicable to the situation in China; (3) Together with the test on simulated electromagnetic environment, to carry out study on the electromagnetic environment in different layout of ultra high voltage DC transmission line.

The official operation of the test line will provide powerful technical support for the construction and operation of the Sichuan - Shanghai ultra high voltage DC transmission line demonstration project, which runs from Fulong in Southwest China’s Sichuan province to Nanhui in East China’s Shanghai city.
