Ten New West Coast Industrial Plants Begin Operation

Leading all industries is the Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry, which had three new plants begin operations during the first quarter. The J David Gladstone Institute completed construction of a new $100 million research and development center in San Francisco, California. Specialty Laboratories Incorporated completed construction of a new $75 million genetics R & D center in Valencia, California, and Petnet Pharmaceuticals Incorporated opened a small manufacturing plant in Spokane, Washington.

Two new Chemical Processing Industry plants opened in California during the first quarter of 2005. Air Liquide America Corporation finished construction of a new $40 million hydrogen plant in El Segundo, California, and a new $40 million adhesives plant built by MAPEI Corporation in San Bernardino, California in now online.

The Food & Beverage Industry has identified two new start-ups, as well.

California Creative Foods Company opened a $2 million salsa manufacturing plant in Oceanside, California, and Herzog Wine Cellars is now bottling wine in a new winery complex in Oxnard, California.

In the Power Industry, the City of Corona Utilities Department commissioned a new $20 million, 30-megawatt cogeneration plant in Corona to provide electricity and steam to a nearby wastewater treatment plant.

In the Metals & Minerals Industry, Eagle Roofing Products began operations on a new $45 million concrete roofing tile plant in Stockton, California.

Semiconductor manufacturer Linear Technology Corporation opened a new $40 million plant to produce dies for silicon wafer chips in an existing and renovated building in Milpitas, California.

These ten projects represent over $360 million in plant construction costs, and close to 1,400 new jobs have been created. Looking ahead to the next quarter of 2005, expect to see the number of new plant start-ups on the West Coast more than double - to 22 new operational plants.
